The winners of the prestigious Costa Awards were announced tonight with Sally Rooney’s Normal People voted the best novel.

Sally Rooney has become the youngest author to win the Costa Novel Award, four months after she was omitted from the Booker Prize shortlist.

The 27-year-old won the prize for her coming-of-age tale, Normal People, described by the Costa judges as “a trailblazing novel about modern life and love that will electrify any reader”.
